Knocked Up: Movie Review

by Jeremy Schoemaker on July 2, 2007 · 62 comments

I went with my wife the other night to see Knocked Up. I have to say this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was as funny as the 40 year old virgin but had a story I could really relate to – ya I felt like I was that guy. When I met my wife 6 years ago I was 420 lbs, smoked 2 packs of cigs a day, played MMORPG’s about 5 hours a day and made less then 20$/hr. Oh and also The longest I ever held a job was about 1 year in my life.

And her? She was a M.D. who also had a degree from the Chicago School Of Business and was in her transitional year before starting her Anesthesia Residency. Plus she was/is totally gorgeous…

I also really liked in the movie how they never did the classic corny romantic twist when the guy gets so close then OHH DAMN!!!! he just messes up AGAIN! I think those get so old….

Anyway it was scary some of the similarities during the movie. Especially the site they were working on (which I wont reveal cause i dont want to ruin the movie) basically like that is all I used to work on back then was things that were fun.

Ya I was out of my league.

I am guessing for most of the people reading this blog that they are not easily offended so I am highly recommending everyone go see this movie.

I agree this movie is great…probably one of the top 5 movies I have ever seen the comedy is great and there isnt any down points, with all the crap hollywood is putting out now its hard to find a great movie, most of the time have a better chance of finding a needle in a haystack.

I’ve been wanting to see this one. The 40-year-old virgin scene where the two guys are saying, ‘know how I know you are gay’ is one of my favorites. Well, that and the chest-hair waxing scene. I guess I need to organize a date night to see this one asap.

I actually walked out of the movie in the middle of it. I thought it was mildly entertaining, but I couldn’t accept the way it made drug use so “hilarious” and acceptable. Anytime a movie seems to minimize the seriousness of drug use, I gotta leap off the bandwagon. I’m not a prude either… it’s just these movies affect the minds of our youth, for better and for worse. I just can’t be a party to it.

My 2 cents.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Knocked Up! HILARIOUS! You’re right though, Shoe; the storytelling/script paired with the natural acting is what really made this comedy excellent. I can’t wait to see it again.

dude I think it’s throughly impressive how you turned around your life. You really had a date with death. I do look forward to seeing this movie.

You’re right, marijuana is totally destroying our youth. You walking out of the movie will definitely help to change that. Especially since marijuana is such an awful drug that has so many negative side effects.

You sir, are a moron.

I left a sad little man. Kathrine Heigle was so hot. Made me depressed I didn’t have a girl around that looked as good as her.

No man, you can’t go into a movie with that much hype and still love it. You gotta convince yourself that it’s going to be just another dumb summer movie then head to the theater! :)

Lol, yea I guess thats true too, the worse I think it is the more I will like it. I have gone to movies that have been really hyped up and still liked them before though, but most of the time it is like you said, when its overly hyped you won’t like it. So maybe before watching the movie I should find some bad reviews and read them :)

LOVED! this movie. I was in tears laughing, and you’re right shoe, it’s scary how people can relate. I thought a guy sitting a few seats down was going to have a heart attack laughing so much… good stuff

You reminded of me with my current gf right now… It must be tough on you in those days… I am not as bad because my gf is only working on a salary while I am struggling to get my internet business up and running for our future.. I will be one of your readers from now on.. :)

I watched the 40 Year Old Virgin on HBO this morning — I never get tired of it. I will definitely watch this one when it comes out over here.

I finally saw this. It was funny, but I have to say 40/yov was funnier. Surprisingly this theme really hadnt been done before, being accidentally “knocked up” and making a comedy of it. Worth a watch though

Put up another vote for Knocked Up, it’s hilarious

Any good comedy is hated by the critics, so check out like New York Times or something and I’m sure they hated it for its baseless humor. haha

If you did, would you have knocked her up to keep her around? :)

Did you really weigh 420 pounds or was this a typo? That means you must have lost the weight equivalent a couple of people. Did you ever consider starting a diet website?

Man, those guys in that house reminded me sooo much of me and my buddies when I lived in Hawaii, surfed every day, partied every night and worked at Kinko’s for pennies. You know, I don’t think it matters whether you realize how much fun you were having at the time, you will always look back on huge chunks of your life and say “those were the days”… which sort of makes you wonder if “these” aren’t “the days” and you just haven’t had time to reflect on them yet.

So I’m with ya on that one shoe. This movie really struck a chord with me.

Not a pot smoker… never was… however I do support the legalization of it. But calling him a moron for a different belief is a little stiff in my mind. He has the right to get up and leave, and to comment on it here — I did not feel he rammed it down our throats. I just accept that he has different beliefs and move on.

Ummm…. so you’re saying you were “420 lbs, smoked 2 packs of cigs a day, played MMORPG’s about 5 hours a day and made less then 20$/hr.” I think the whole point of your post was that you weren’t looking exactly like “winner” material.

But you didn’t answer the question. In spite of all those things she fell in love with you.

What was it? You both loved beanie babies? You have a 12 inch schlong? You stand to inherit a fortune from when your dad won the lottery?

That happened to me with the Blair Witch.

It was okay and all, but everybody was telling me it was the best thing they ever saw and I walked out really disappointed.

50 Cath Lawson July 3, 2007 at 11:06 pm

I just read it. I would never have guessed you weighed that much – you look so fit and healthy in the photos on the front of the site.

It’s an amazing story and you were brave to have the op, but I can understand why you don’t want to go under the knife again for the loose skin removal. It’s one thing having surgery for health reasons like you did, but it just isn’t worth it for cosmetic reasons. I have a scar on my face, but I wouldn’t risk dying to have surgery done on it.

The people that did drugs in the movie were essentially unemployed losers. I don’t think that made it out to be “hillarious”. Besides, do you not drink and not smoke? Don’t drink coffee? Really, try to escape from your culture a little bit and view things objectively.

The advert for this movie is saying it’s as close to perfect as a comedy could get. Doesn’t look like it to me… but i’ll just have to watch it.

To me a perfect comedy is The Office (UK) these American movies are usually easy comedy from visual gags and predictable plots.
