Register.com - Worst Domain Registrar Ever
I hate register.com seriously they have to be the worst ever domain registrar. Years ago (like 6) I used them to register domains back when they were 70$ for 2 years. I only have a about 14 domains left with them. After wasting ONE HOUR on hold just trying to get a auho code to transfer a domain I just lost it.
1) They charge 35$ a year for domains.
2) They call your phone number listed for each domain constatly trying to sell you shit (this really bugs me). I have asked them several times to stop and they dont.
3) There interface sucks
4) They waste tons of your time when you could be productive at other stuff (hold times, solicitation(s), shitty interface)
5) If/When you do want to transfer a domain out of there system they make you call to get a auth code (instead of just logging in like every other registrar)
6) If/When you do want to transfer a domain out of there system they make you call to get a auth code but instead of just giving it to you first you have to explain to them why your leaving to which of course they have a answer for everything (aka its a “security feature”) just pissing you off more.
7) If it wasnt for the fact they own register.com i doubt anyone would ever got there
They charge 35$ a year for domains.
9) There auth codes when you finally do get them from the person on the phone are 16 digits long… uhhhh nice one (good luck not getting anything lost in translation)
10) They make you call them to do about anything on there site. And when you call they answer the phone “Thanks for calling register.com can I sell you x, x, x, or x. Its like they went to the Taco Bell school of annoying you.

Yes, they are awful.
I pretty much use Namecheap for everything now.
[Reply]
I haven’t used them in years…I stick to Godaddy, haven’t had any issues with them, nice and cheap domains with good interface.
[Reply]
I agree. I used them when I first started becoming a webmaster back in 1999, but havent registered a domain with them since. Have 1 still left with them, which I should probably move to Godaddy soon.
[Reply]
I second this. Register.com has terrible service, is vastly overpriced, and is very frustrating to deal with. I transferred my domains out from them a long time ago.
[Reply]
I forgot to mention that they’ve been hijacking one of my domains for years because I no longer have access to the email address on the whois. I’ve jumped through their hoops to try to get it back and haven’t had the energy to keep pursuing it.
[Reply]
I’ve had similar frustrations with name registrars. I’ve been at dotster for a while now and I’m happy there. Prices are cheaper in other places, but I don’t have *that* many domains, so it’s worth the money to me.
[Reply]
Go Daddy rocks!
[Reply]
Register.com is evil.
Let’s say you are small dummy business owner and you have no idea about the Internet. Your buddy buys your domain name, but put’s his generic comcast email address as the contact.
A few years later you want a real site, but your buddy disappears off the face of the either. IF you send Register.com $200 and the form they send you, they MAY give you back your domain.
[Reply]
Shoe: Who do you use? I’ve been a happy GoDaddy customer for quite some time.
[Reply]
Hey Shoe,
I agree with you about Register.com. Godaddy is also on my S list. I’ve since switched to NameCheap. I love their control panel and so far they’ve had great customer service.
Plus they don’t charge $35 per year for a freakin’ domain name!
[Reply]
Well, it could be worse; you could be a registerfly customer
[Reply]
$35 dollars a year!!! damn that’s alot!!
Can’t believe you could stick with them all this time I mean I would have left them as soon as my first contract went out if not sooner.
[Reply]
$35 a domain!!! WTF - why would any pay that?
I have been using GoDaddy for 5 years, but thinking of going to Moniker.
[Reply]
I second that. I have heard a few horror stories, but not any thing personally.
[Reply]
what? a domain for $35 a year? So expensive! I just mercumaya.com just now and planning to buy some domain at GoDaddy.
[Reply]
Ya I use godaddy for about 5000 + domains
[Reply]
Same thing happened here with register.com. Took forever just transfer multiple domains to a registrar that doesn’t kill your bank account.
[Reply]
As long as there’s Registerfly, I’m pretty sure that it’s a rule that you can’t call anyone else the “worst domain registrar.”
But… $35/year would be too much even if they had great service.
[Reply]
Yes, I came across that problem just a few days ago when trying to transfer a domain away from register.com, I was so annoyed that you have to ring them to get the transfer code, and didnt bother to ring them. I think that is what they count on most people doing, so that they dont transfer away. ICANN should really do something about them, I have used tonnes of other domain registrars, and you can get your authorisation code online for all of them.
[Reply]
Sounds like pretty solid “family” busines…
[Reply]
my favorite one is 1and1… reallllly cheap
[Reply]
I used registerfly.com a few years ago and it was fine, but I recently tried to buy another one from them without knowing about their lawsuit and I got ripped off. I’m pissed.
[Reply]
I use namecheap for EVERYTHING, in my opinion they are the best, so easy to transfer, get new domainds.. I love them.
[Reply]
I prefer Moniker. We have a great rate with them and I had the chance to meet them at an industry event.
[Reply]
I agree. I can’t believe people still pay $35/year for that. And to make it worse, instantdomainsearch.com is now ONLY offering a “deal” for register.com at 9.99. They used to have multiple registrars to register from, and now they only offer from the crappy register.com. What kind of “deal” is 9.99? A deal for them perhaps, but not in this day of age.
[Reply]
I still cant believe that people use them. Why does anyone pay that much for a domain name? I get pissed off when I cant find a $6.99 deal and have to pay $8 from Godaddy. What are they giving you for $35?
I know that they also send you crap in the mail which I also hate.
[Reply]
They got people to pay the $35 fee and everyone just sticks with them because its suck a pain to make the actual transfer. Im sure thats why you pushed it off for 6 years.
[Reply]
Have you ever had a godaddy sales call? I was 15 mins of them talking rubbish whilst i was paying an international call
[Reply]
1&1 are ok until you have problems. I used them years ago when they mainly served Europe and thigs dont seem much better now
[Reply]
Its got a lot to do with people just renewing old domains. They are so old they have a lot of big companies who dont know better
[Reply]
I also Use Godaddy and I am very happy with them.
[Reply]
I started with Directnic. Good service, but $15 per domain per year. Then I moved them all to GoDaddy. Company was pretty lame early on, but they made a lot of improvements… some apparently in response to feedback from me and others. And the price was good.
Over time, though, I became convinced that Bob Parsons (GoDaddy main dude) is an egomaniac (strikes me as a real danger sign in dealing with a company. It’s taken me most of a year, but I have almost completed moving all my 100+ domains over to NameCheap. Decent service, respectable price.
[Reply]
I am in total agreement with you. I started my web life with them and I couldn’t wait for my domains to end so I could switch them to Godaddy. They are reliable, cheap and you get a real person at customer support. They handle the problem in minutes. Great Post
[Reply]
Their Phone reps are probably commission based.
See, a company like Godaddy actually cares about their customers. The first domain name I registered with them, they actually called me asking me if I had any problems with the domain or anything. Now that, to me, is a company who cares.
[Reply]
um godaddy sucks…. go with namecheap
[Reply]
namecheap is awesome… the problem is they don’t have live support
[Reply]
There are reasons why people choose Godaddy. I tried another popular domain registrar moniker.com, but they have serious error and I could not even add fund to my account. And by the way, if register.com is shit, what is registerfly?
[Reply]
Plus they don’t support SPF/TXT records! How long have they been around and they don’t support simple protocols!
[Reply]
You’re kidding right? GoDaddy has a terrible interface. Everything involves a pile of screens trying to sell you something, transferring names in our out means jumping through hoops. Namecheap hands down for me any day, even if GoDaddy can be cheaper.
[Reply]
godaddy is the best
[Reply]
We’ve always used Network Solutions. Any time we try someone else, something doesn’t work right. Network Solutions gives us a dedicated toll-free with a human answering within a few rings, call from time to time to check up on us, and give us reminders for things well in advance. Even when we messed up and let something expire, within minutes of us figuring it out they had it back up and running to give us time to get the registration renewed… and that was on a holiday. Great service, and worth the extra money for someone focused on a few domains that they run a lot of business through.
[Reply]
I have been using GoDaddy for a while now, their interface sucks and is not user friendly. Once you go to checkout they load on other screens which automatically pile on more charges.
What do you recommend Shoemoney?
[Reply]
Yesterday I brought new domain. It was my first time when I got a domain registered by chick from support. Damn, it was quite efficient anyway…
[Reply]
Not many available extensions they have…
[Reply]
Hmmm. But a few weeks ago there were not appeared any problems with domain transfers. I’ve heard that now if you want to get authinfo code you have to play with new profile, and use some sort of evil black magic.
[Reply]
I cannot understand that some registrars keep so high fees when everyone around can find registration around $9. I am using idotz.net for few years and I am happy.
[Reply]
godaddy is good for domains, don’t even think about using them for hosting.
i’m transferring to mediatemple pretty soon, two of my newest domains are set up their already.
[Reply]
$35 for a domain name! That’s one of the reasons why I didn’t get into the .com arena till cheaper domain registrars came around.
[Reply]
Im really starting to hate godaddy to with all the shady shit they do.
[Reply]
tierra.net is my place to go for domains.
Not sure why people still recommend GoDaddy…from what I hear, it sounds like a game of Russian roulette to me. A registrar should not be allowed to play ‘net cop–that should be left to the third-party organizations.
[Reply]
GoDaddy? Have you guys seen the reports on some of the forums ( http://www.threadwatch.org/node/3785 for example) about how they extort you if someone claims you spammed them? It seems they hold your domain for ransom. Clamping down on spam is ok. But their approach sounds like a shakedown operation.
[Reply]
You’d think that at $35 a pop, they wouldn’t aggressively upsell you as hard as they do. I can see GoDaddy’s aggressively doing it because they charge only $8.95 a domain and it is entirely online (no phone calls ever), but at $35 a pop it’s ridiculous. It’s like commercials at the movies!
[Reply]
Me too… though I kinda wish I wasn’t so cheap.
[Reply]
15 minutes… you need to go to my school of handling crap calls like that. I say “no thank you, I never, ever, deal with telemarketers. Please remove me from your list, or you can continue to call back and I will continue to become more rude and obnoxious, your choice”, then I hang up. I usually start my little quote while they are talking and I do not stop.
I don’t have a problem with telemarketers making a living… I can just save them the time and tell them I will never, ever convert for a telemarketer. On topic — I’ve never received a call from GoDaddy (or had an issue) in my nearly 5 years of dealing with them.
[Reply]
I’ve tried so many registrars but ended up with godaddy, very user friendly interface and a fast support team, and well it’s not 30$ (thats ridiculous) =0)
[Reply]
NameCheap is an ENOM reseller so if you can get into ENOM then do it a lot more options, good phone support, and hopefuly cheaper in the end.
[Reply]
I still have a domain trapped at registerfly… I recently renewed it hoping it would go live again (I couldn’t inthe past because of “ERRORS”) and it’s been over a day and it’s still showing their landing page!!! GRRR
$35/yr = better than domain being dead or loosing it.
[Reply]
Anyone ever hosted their site, and consequently registered a domain, thru Bluehost?
[Reply]
I still have 1 site registered with Register.com on a longer running contract. As soon as that finishes I’m out of there too. Way too expensive! I’ve got the rest now at a cheap Dutch registrar.
[Reply]
I share your dislike of Register.com. The only reason they are still around is because they were the first. They are also the only registrar that advertises on AM radio about getting a website in 30 minutes. What a joke!
[Reply]
Once you learn that annoying interface it’s great. And Register.com does suck. I’m still waiting to get my last domain moved from them because their hours suck. I think this is the only reason they actually have any domains left.
[Reply]
I also use GoDaddy.com which has been my first, and so far my only choice for domains.
[Reply]
No one is mentioning how much 1and1 sucks?? Mainly: 1) The dumb-ass control panel is absolutely moronic and 2) You have to jump through hoops to transfer or cancel a domain, including faxing signed forms, etc. I use GoDaddy for most of my domains - I have to say it’s the best overall.
[Reply]
If they actually delivered a good service + that awesome domain, then they’d probably earn twice as much.
[Reply]
Well registernames.com ($25) is just as bad. I still have the first domain I ever registered with them. Every year I forget to transfer it out
[Reply]
Do they really still charge $35 a year? Who still pays that much? I pay $6 at 1and1.
[Reply]
ummm, 1&1’s domain transfer process is not that cumbersome and it is free for interneal transfers. I for one am happy that some ‘identity proof’ is required. As for their control panel, yes, it’s different from cPanel or Plesk, but you can still do most everything you need. Specifically regarding the ‘domain’ section of the control panel, no it’s not quite as good as GoDaddy or Enom, but then 1&1 is not really a “bulk registrar” even though their regular domain prices are lower than whatmost domain resellers charge. I think most people would find 1&1 very acceptable.
[Reply]
I’m a huge GoDaddy fan. They’ve been so good to me that I’ve never even had to think about switching.
[Reply]
I agree, the Register.com people don’t “get it” but my worst experience -ever- was with Network Solutions who found a way to “lose” some of my most valuable domains… with no hope of ever getting them back!
Needless to say, I’ve stopped all my business with NetSol, since then.
Given the nature of the domain name business, domain registries should be as secure as the best financial institutions out there… and they should also be fully accountable for -everything- that happens within their realm or that of any other registry that has interacted with them -or- their customers.
[Reply]
I had a similiar issue with them but i was lucky to transfer a domain to enom
Good bye register.com
Welcome enom.com
[Reply]
if register.com is the worst Domain Registrar, Globat is the worst Web Hosting company.
- They upgrade you automatically and charge you for that if you do not send them an email saying you don’t want an uto upgrade.
- They want you to call before you can cancel your account
I really hope they’ll get bankcrupt soon
[Reply]
Godaddy is great if you have a lot of domains - you can get an account executive who handles everything for you. For the best security on a small number of valuable domains, Moniker or Fabulous cannot be beat. 1&1 are terrible - if you ever cancel a name at 1&1 and think you’re done, wait until next renewal date when they bill you anyway unless you fax in a signed form confirming you want to cancel your “contract” with them, even *after* the domain has long since been transferred away.
[Reply]
I always use Namecheap, never had a problem with it. It’s quick, cheap and reliable.
[Reply]
I just use godaddy for all my domain names, lowest names to.
Stevepmd
[Reply]
I would not use them.

I worked at register.com up until recently and just found your blog post on this topic now. You are 100% correct. The management, especially Larry Kutcher the CEO and Roni (in charge of product development) his little lap dog are very unethical.
The company is a sinking ship. Transfer anything you have to godaddy or a trusted registrar before it is too late.
The CEO is a complete and utter failure and has no business running an Internet company.
ps - r.Values are a joke you stole from D&B larry - why not actually practice what you preach?
[Reply]
I use GoDaddy because - GASP - they’re customer service is unbeatable. So much for there being no customer loyalty on the web.
[Reply]
Say NO to register.com
register.com is an obstructionist registrar. They provide no way to manage one’s DN on line - cannot get auth codes to move DN with out a phone call to NY during limited hours. Prices are outrageous - for *nothing* but delay. Livechat is another time waster.
I hope that their business practices, so paranoid and rude, are rewarded with low to no sales. Read reviews before you buy (rent) DN from any registrar.
