Making Money With Contextual Advertising – NYC Presentation
Posted on: April 15th, 2007 by Jeremy Schoemaker
Here is my presentation from NYC. Unlike Chicago this is about the 6th time I have done public speaking and I felt a lot more comfortable. Still a lot of room for improvement
I did receive written permission to record the session and publish it on my blog or use it for other “non commercial” use.
Evil Green Monkey Did a live writeup of the session over at seroundtable.
Hi I am Jeremy Schoemaker and ShoeMoney.com is my blog. 99% of the post here are done by me but you will see others occasionally make guest posts. This blog is fun to write but for my day job I run several online companies.
More about Jeremy at http://www.shoemoney.com!

The presentation was good and the conference was informative.
Several references were made to using Heatmaps for Ad placement.

good stuff; still is helpful at 2 years old.
April 24, 2007 at 8:49 am
Great presentation shoe, thanks for posting.
April 21, 2007 at 7:01 pm
Hi,
what a nice video! Thanks for this presentation, guy!
April 20, 2007 at 6:51 pm
Good presentation. Any chance you could also share your powerpoint?
April 20, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Great Video. You didn’t seem nervous at all.
April 20, 2007 at 2:05 am
lol it sounds like you’ve been getting choked out on newb questions
April 20, 2007 at 2:03 am
wow, Australia. You know it would be nice if they paid a small company to make the video presentations available afterwards (minus some stuff to still make it valuable to actually go) and charge like $200-300 for the collection for those of us that still would like the info but cant make it. just an idea
April 18, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Great job, I would be nervous, and I had public speaking classes for college
April 18, 2007 at 1:25 pm
Jeremy, you’re really improving on your speaking engagements. I’d love to see a video series on your website.
April 18, 2007 at 10:30 am
I would love to cover more advanced issues but the panel is making money with contextual advertising. I think about half of the audience was pretty new to it. If you have any specific advanced issues related to contextual advertising I would love to hear them. (Believe me )
April 18, 2007 at 10:16 am
what site is he talking about?
that ringtone one?
April 18, 2007 at 8:06 am
Add roughly 2 days extra travel, jet lag, and several thousand dollars of plane tickets to and from Australia, and I’ve got a similar dilemma.
But I’m sure I’ll get a lot out of these.
April 18, 2007 at 8:03 am
Yeah – I couldn’t agree more.
In a past life, I used to promote and run wealth creation seminars (marketing & back of house).
If you’ve got the fundamentals, you’ll brush up really well. If you don’t, then it doesn’t matter how good the content is, it’s rare to nail a killer presentation.
For what it’s worth, I think you’ve got it where it counts. As your wife says – you speak well… she might be a little biased, but I agree…
April 17, 2007 at 2:12 pm
Jeremy what were the nam of the sites that you presented. I didnt catch them all
April 17, 2007 at 12:47 pm
Much better then the other presentation Shoe.
Would like to see you talk about more advanced issues in the future though.
April 17, 2007 at 10:27 am
Great presentation, Shoe. Thanks for sharing.
April 17, 2007 at 9:55 am
thanks
April 17, 2007 at 8:48 am
Nice presentation, Shoe. Hopefully, I’ll get to sit in on another session of yours. I was at your session at SES Chicago last year, and took a lot out of it.
April 16, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Wow, very open presentation. I got 2 pages of great notes TY for sharing the info. It is also great to hear you started out from nothing. I hope you can broadcast more of your presentations in the future.
April 16, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Read a few posts up.
April 16, 2007 at 9:35 pm
I’ve been testing designs since then they are great!!
April 16, 2007 at 9:07 pm
It opens my mind and motivate me. Excellent presentation.
April 16, 2007 at 8:12 pm
I wrote an article on my blog around some points on this presentation. I thought the presentation was a pretty good introduction to contextual advertising.
I liked the part about Shoe’s Dad getting banned from Adsense. Adding in personal references can endear you to audiences..
April 16, 2007 at 5:48 pm
i heard that man.
April 16, 2007 at 5:29 pm
Great tips shoe
April 16, 2007 at 5:03 pm
Thanks for posting this! Great presentation!
April 16, 2007 at 3:25 pm
ow and by the way could you release or post the presentation sheet aswell? I mean I want to see the images and slides as well!
April 16, 2007 at 3:14 pm
damn, you started up really fast, I guess it was the adrenaline pumping there
Anyway cool speach man
April 16, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Cool presentation.
April 16, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I was present. It was really an eye-opener, and I applaud Shoemoney taking the Y to task for their blotchy ad serving.
Great meeting you in person as well Shoe!
April 16, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Jeremy your track was by far one of my favorite sessions! Even if we were a little hung over from Alan’s party the night before

I’m looking for more info on heat maps to, I don’t suppose you could comment with some sources?
April 16, 2007 at 1:51 pm
They charge a good buck for attendance, I keep wanting to go but its like $1000 + travel costs..
April 16, 2007 at 1:50 pm
Thanks Shoe I’ll check that out!
April 16, 2007 at 1:49 pm
I would love to go but the cost is just so high it’s just kind of hard to justify, I make a good side income on the web but not enough to fly out to New York for a few days.
April 16, 2007 at 1:47 pm
I could hear him just fine? I wish we could see the slides but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.
April 16, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Ya I’m horrible with public speaking, Shoe looked a bit nervous at the start but it was a very easy to watch presentation.
April 16, 2007 at 12:10 pm
good presentation man.
April 16, 2007 at 11:57 am
thx for sharing Shoe! Great presentation.
April 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
Could you post your powerpoint as well?
April 16, 2007 at 11:18 am
Thanks for the video Shoe.
April 16, 2007 at 10:46 am
Nice to see you in action. It was nice presentation.
April 16, 2007 at 9:49 am
Good presentation… both entertaining and educational…
April 16, 2007 at 9:23 am
Very interesting. I had some problems to understand it all but I think I understood the major part of your relation. Thanks.
April 16, 2007 at 8:34 am
Shhhh!
April 16, 2007 at 8:34 am
Thanks got putting this video out so quickly and getting permission to video it in the first place, this is awesome!
April 16, 2007 at 8:32 am
Shoe got me turned on to heat maps from a previous talk he gave. I am still new at it, but it is really interesting to see what people click on. It hasn’t been so useful for the main part of the content area of my blog, but is is AWESOME for tracking where people are clicking on the sidebar.
April 16, 2007 at 8:30 am
They are going to need someting BETTER than what Googe has if they hope to compete. Simply matching Google is not enough at this point.
April 16, 2007 at 8:25 am
They have to leave some reason for people to attend the confrence. These things are not cheap to put on and they need make money on the deal too.
April 16, 2007 at 8:23 am
Those kind of things come with time an experience. Something tells me that Shoe will have plenty of speaking opportunities in the future!
April 16, 2007 at 7:52 am
Gret reentatin Shoe! I always get so many new deas whenever I have teportuniy to listen to you speak. Tnks for making he effort to get peission to tape and bradcast this.
April 16, 2007 at 6:42 am
As a listen of your radio show I feel cheated. You just rehashed old radio shows. Now in your next blog post NICHE DROP LIKE ITS 2005! *rubs hands together in anticipation* (hey guys, you think it’ll work?)
Also, In this post you dangled a carrot in front of my face with the edit.

Excellent presentation. I have to applaud you on holding Yahoo accountable for their targeting problems. I’ve had major problems as an advertiser in the past with Yahoo ads running on sites that didn’t even contain my target keywords. I’m talking top 5 bid short tail targeted life insurance ads being run on myspace layout sites. I really hope that a serious dialog about this problem opens up soon.
April 16, 2007 at 6:26 am
I thought you did a great job… seemed genuinely friendly and open to helping us out.
now if we could just get you to sit that same camera in every session next year, we’d be able to skip the thousand dollar or so entrance fee and watch the conference at home.
April 16, 2007 at 6:09 am
Great job I enjoyed the show.
April 16, 2007 at 6:02 am
I can assure you , in most time when you give a presentation you dont see anyone in front of you .
you are in another world lol
Its sooo hard (especially for beginners)
April 16, 2007 at 5:17 am
Great one Shoe, your presentation skills are pretty good actually, you certainly delivered the message.
April 16, 2007 at 2:55 am
I really enjoyed your presentation. I agree, seeing the slides would have been good for your jokes, but it was a fun presentation as it was anyway.
April 16, 2007 at 1:48 am
Shoe,
Great presentation. Just by chance do you have those sites you were mentioning? Or are you not allowed to give those out?
April 16, 2007 at 12:20 am
Nice presentation. I like how you have made an agreement with them to be able to post stuff like this on your blog.
April 16, 2007 at 12:09 am
Haha I like the AdSense and YPN comparison
I really hope YPN starts getting their stuff together and figures out how to target ads finally!
April 15, 2007 at 11:46 pm
Thanks for posting it. Looking forward to watching it in the AM
April 15, 2007 at 11:41 pm
w00t, i was wondering how long it would be until you posted the video!
April 15, 2007 at 11:20 pm
Awesome presentation. I had no idea about heat maps, I will have to try them out soon.
April 15, 2007 at 10:51 pm
I’m sure the SES guys wouldn’t like to hear you say that – presumably the reason they wanted to limit what you released was so that people would want to come along to the events to get what they missed out on!
So far, I think the bus trip is the big thing we missed out on
April 15, 2007 at 10:48 pm
+1
Great presentation.
But we need to get you to stand closer to the microphone
April 15, 2007 at 10:47 pm
Great speech, I especially appreciated the part about BearShare’s grey area… got me thinking.. in the grey
Thanks.
April 15, 2007 at 10:28 pm
I was there with my wife. I was throwing up East Coast gang signs to Shoe but he must not have seen me. Trust me everything important was in the talk not in the presentation. Very inspiring Jeremy! I would have introduced myself but I was nursing a hangover.
April 15, 2007 at 10:10 pm
I had the creators of crazyegg.com on my show here we go into a lot of detail. Also the blog post has screenshots.
April 15, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Actually part of the agreement of me being able to post the video is that I would not post the slides. Also my slides are really boring and would make no sense. They are just funny pictures for the most part.
April 15, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Great video, thanks for posting. If possible, could you post your slides?
April 15, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Several references were made to using Heatmaps for Ad placement.
Could you do a future post on Heatmaps and how to get access to this technology?
Thanx

April 15, 2007 at 8:55 pm
