Ringtones Make Up 10% Of Worldwide Music Revenue

by Jeremy Schoemaker on February 14, 2007 · 16 comments

In the new issue of Playboy (page 25 bottom left) they claim “10% of the worldwide music industry revenue comes exclusively from ring-tone sales”? BTW – I read playboy for the articles and I eat at hooters for the food… seriously…

As the saying goes, there are lies, damn lies and statistics. :) However, it is undeniable as to the rise of ringtones. The mobile phone users are traditionally the young and affluent – affected by pop music & peer pressure into being cool. These factors combined – disposable income, impulse purchasing & reverse billing (eg you don’t have to process cheques, Paypal, cash etc) are a marketer’s dream… there are plenty of people both here in the UK and abroad who have got rich on the back of ringtones.

You can pay $2 for a song and don’t even get the whole thing as a ringtone. Or you can pay $1 at iTunes and get the whole thing but not be able to use it as a ringtone. So, combine the two and Apple gets super rich, puts a small dent in ringtone sales and then wields even MORE power over the music industry while Cingular gets a nice check for having the network.

I never understood hooters wings, who eats the wing tip? plus they don’t come broken down already its the whole wing. When I get wings, it better be no wing tips, the have to be split, and I hate ones that have broken bones. When I moved to pittsburgh I went to a bar and ordered wings, I’m used to them being split and I ordered 24 wings, I ended up getting 48 wings….. I wondered why they were so expensive……….

Wow. 10%?? Why would anyone (or at least so many people) be buying those when you can make your own. A guy I work with keeps changing around 80′s songs that he rips himself. His latest, Final Countdown by Europe. I think he got that from GOB on Arrested Development.
