Calacanis Plays SEO People Like A Fiddle

by Jeremy Schoemaker on February 9, 2007 · 31 comments

fiddlerI am just amazed at how well Jason Calacanis plays the SEO industry. For a industry that likes to call out linkbait …… wow… Calacanis just reeled in a ton of links fish

Just think about it. If you need to promote something what is the biggest industry you could attract… The SEO industry.. why? Because 1) They all have blogs and 2) They rank for everything. So here is what you do. You piss them all off so you have there attention then you make nice with them and booyah… welcome to a whole new audience.

Overnight Calacanis has become a houshold name in the industry and BEAUTIFULLY now has offered to have on some of the most recognized SEO’s in the business on his Calacanis cast (podcast) in which no doubt by the end they will be singing kumbaya together and when all the dust settles he will have thousands more RSS readers and … the bigger picture… more more more eyeballs for his new 2.0 conference with Techcrunch.

Also a funny note Calacanis has agreed to be on Rockstars (I will believe it when I see it) OHH but first he says

I’ll be on the show.. sure. just let me know when. I’m gonna do my own show first with a couple of guests…

ya…… so……..

Anyway I don’t hate… Great job Jason. You have an entire industry rilled up and dying to get you for a interview or on there podcast (where you can pitch your new conference). I just feel sorry for Dave Pasternack who is trying to jump on your bandwagon but doesnt quite see your end goal.

Check out these 64 links in just the last 24 hours alone from bloggers in the seo industry

Some of the bigger seo people that Calacanis is reeling in:

David Naylor Poins out how bad netscape has gone down hill since Calcanis took over.

Dave Also makes a post Do You Agree Wih Calacanis In which Dave points out the differences between Jason and other Sequoia Capitol employees.

  • Google Says: Only Worry About A Few SEO Firms
  • SEO Is Not A Synonym For Spamming Or Gaming
  • I’m Proud To Be An SEOican…
  • SMO Facing SEO’s Challenges

I would love to see Jason and Dave Pasternack debate this on a Search Marketing Expo Panel vs some long time SEO People but I think they are more doing this for headlines and links.

Pronet Advertising

Neil Patel at Pronet Advertising makes a open challenge to Jason

Robert Scoble

Scobleizer makes a post titled The search engine guru schools Calacanis In which he has a short blurb telling people to read Dannys post and learn about t he Search Engine Optimization, SEO Guides, SEO Marketing”>Search Engine Optimization industry.

A Scoble commenter brings up a old subject

Just a few months ago Jason told us he could game Alexa, whatever became of that project?

Make that over 100 Links now. Btw. The Trick only works if you already have a well known blog. In another part of the industry I might add. It would be suicide (and completely stupid) if you have a SEO blog :)

I am a big fan of the shoemoney blog, but to be honest I think this post is a bit unfair. I dont think he is playing anyone, I just think he is speaking his mind. Besides, I think most of the people in the SEO industry would have known of him long before those comments. The sale of weblogsinc to AOL, pretty much made him a household name in the web industry, even though I know he was popular before that.

Dude can squeeze lemonade out of a rock. All the free publicity and even a free consulting gig from Neil? More power to him.

He may have got a ton of links but he’s made a lot of enemies not exactly usefull in his new VC job he needs to learn some social skills (or is he just the lad that fetches the tea)

Well I could go to your house and shit on your doorstep and probably get some attention, but I don’t think I’d want to be known as “the guy who shit on Shoemoney’s doorstep just to get attention”.

I guess I should start cut my own hair, cause my hairdresser always gets in wrong. Oh, by the way, I think this whole world is full of salesmen, I think I’ll stop buying anything from now on. He makes perfect sense.

You could critize all insurance agents too, but is it really worth hurting people’s feelings for personal gain

Calacanis might be attention but it might not be good for him. I dont agree with any attention is good attention. I think SEOs are smart too – they’ll give him links, but with a negative anchor test or a link condom.

I like Jason but I do think he has a habit of overstating his case. If he wants to make an assertion such as “90 percent of SEOers are snake oil salesmen,” that’s fine, but I’d like to see the data behind this conclusion.

Anyone want to lay odds on someone starting a retributive campaign to displace the search term “Jason Calcanis” from Google SERPs?

With all due respect, for those of us who’ve had a liquidity event or two, JC comes off like a classless, spineless, unimpressive dick. You can be Terrell Owens or you can be Jerry Rice in this world and JC is leaning a lot more towards fake suicide attention whoring side of things than he is towards the Hall of Fame side of things.

All right – so I went to Jason’s web site as the link said. I came upon his bull dogs. Perhaps they are his? I don’t know. But, man, I really love bull dogs. They rock. I wish I could have a dog. Dogs are great for days when you are feeling blue.
