Hey J-Z Chill Your Dill - Mybloglog Drama

Jeremy Zawodny (Or as I like to call him JZ not to be confused with Jay-Z ) has suprised me writing about Andy Beal about “spamming mybloglog”.

Andy Fires one back with Jeremy Zawodny Get A Damn Clue

Ok so thats the present so how did all this get started? Well…

Andy Beal and I had a little marketing contest to see who could get the most members to there Mybloglog community. I wrote about it here

But before we ever did that I emailed Scott Rafer and made sure it was cool:

Hey Scott-

Just wanted to make sure this was ok with you

Jeremy

And soon after Scott Responded and said there was no problem and “thanks enough for competing over it” which I thought was super cool.

Ok Back to the present…

So on one hand I can understand maybe Zawodny woke up on the wrong side of the bed and that just pissed him off seeing “win a zune” or something… I feel bad for Andy because being a whitehat seo is his business and he has a good name for doing “whitehat” seo work. This is hardly spamming its more like creative marketing (well that is my opinion). Anyway why try to call him out like that? Why not just shoot him a email and save yourself the embaresment after MyBlogLog had already given the ok?

JZ I have so much respect for you as a mysql contributor but I think you were way off on this one man.

There will always be people that view marketing as spam and those that view spam as marketing.

Ya I guess once you help them get tons of members then your a spammer… even tho they were onboard?

It’s really too bad. JeremyZ seems like a nice guy when I talk to him, and I could actually sit down and read his MySQL book cover to cover. Normally a boring topic, but he made it interesting.

Then again, now that Y bought MBL he can have his own opinion. After all, JZ didn’t say it was OK for you guys to do the contest.

Personally, I think what you and AB did was great marketing and helped increase the value of MBL, just like your new comments deal is going to do. There are plenty of people that need to get their pictures up yet, but they’re slowly filling in, which shows the power of a popular blog and a cool blog tool.

I like it better when he posts about his airplane. :D

sorry guys, but this is sooo kindergarten :)
and that’s what brings me to the idea. why don’t andy and you put each a 1k on the table and jeremy doubles it and you actually hand this over to some youth initiative or so in the name of mybloglog.com. this should be a good compensation.

after all, nobody has been harmed anyway :)

I gotta agree. Zawodny is completely out of the realm of common sense on this one. Encouraging people to sign up for MBL is not spamming. They’ll try it and either like it and keep using it, or hate it. Writing a script to create a few thousand MBL accounts would be spamming…not that I would ever do that.

    Heh.

I’m glad you guys got Scott’s blessing before doing that, but I’m not sure how it’s relevant to me liking the idea. :-)
I just happen to think that it devalues the site if people start swapping in “promotional” images for their site screenshots. But that’s me.

Peter: I’ll get an airplane related post up for you, don’t worry. :-)

Jeremy, both parties have modified their posts and Jeremy apologized. You might want to update this post as well.

I agree with JZ on this one. Contest or not, it is still lame when people spam on anything using their star status.
