Haters, Comments, and Paid Postings – Late Monday Questions

by Jeremy Schoemaker on January 26, 2007 · 9 comments

ShoeMoney it seems like your haters are increasing. It seems like once a week I see a new shoemoney is a scam or ShoeMoney sucks website. How do you deal with that?

I would hope I can get past my ego and pride and then filter out any of their personal attacks or slander and get to the real root of the issue. I do pay attention to criticism and its probably the #1 way I learn. Take for instance the first Elite Retreat we had. It was my first time being involved with something like that. We had bad marketing, a bad website, a bad date and a bad venue and were thrashed pretty well for it in blogs and forums. Instead of engaging and arguing we tried to learn as best we could from all the criticism. The one thing we knew we had was a awesome new innovative product that just could not fail and that of course was the main piece.

We learned a lot from that and now are almost 1/3 sold out for our second event after only 4 days of announcing it.

So basically I try to learn from it, however, I have in the past posted a heated response to something. Admittedly, its something I struggle with.

Final thoughts on this question (I feel like I could write a book on this): there is nothing you can do about the law of averages. You are seen by enough people and a percentage are not going to like you. You have 3 choices: Ignore It, Argue Back, Learn From It.

Hey Shoe- I posted a comment and it never showed up. Whats the deal?

I cant get too much into the exact ShoeMoney™ comment inclusion algorithm but I can point out some of the obvious.

Here are things that automatically will hold a comment for approval:

  • You have never posted a comment I have approved before.
  • You put in 1 of 150 words that trigger your comment to wait to be approved (most likely swear words).
  • Your comment contains a link (all comments that contain links are held for moderation)

Hi -
I was interested in advertising on this site, but I would rather pay for a review of my site posted here as a blog entry. My site is related and the review could be negative or positive, but is this something you do? If you’re interested I would like to discuss this more with you.

I do not do paid reviews but feel free to send me websites to check out. If I like them I will write about them (although very rarely). The same policy is true with products. People send me free stuff all the time (probably once a week. I rarely write about them unless I get free time and really like them. Most of the time if its something I like I will just buy it and write about it if I like it.

Each Monday I am going to try to take some questions asked to me in email and here on the blog and answer them. I call the answer part the “Shoemoney answer? mainly because I do not know if its right or wrong but its what I think based on my experience so far.

Fair play for opening it up to questions…

And shouldn’t worry about the haters, you should be worried if their aren’t any

i honestly think that arguing back isn’t worth to me. it’s just wasting of time, just keep critics and learn from them, that’s the way.

Hey Shoe I definitely like your view on haters and I always keep in mind your comment “I never learned anything from a compliment” I think you nailed this whole issue in your shows with seoblackhat or Matt from wordpress I don’t remember which one.

I think if people are taking the time to hate you then they are either: jealous and/or stupid. A smart business person shouldn’t have enough time in the day to dedicate to hating somebody and building sites just to trash people.

Anyways….just keep ignoring them and doing your thing Shoemoney your show has gives me more value and real life knowledge then I get from some of my classes at college.

Hope to see Season 2 – Net income…..

Peace out..

As mentioned above you’re always going to have someone that has a problem with *something* you’re doing. I made a decision early on to simply ignore any personal negative comments. Being open to suggestions for improvement is important, but personal attacks never warrant reply.
