Its Cyber Monday Baby!! How Are Your Sales?

by Jeremy Schoemaker on November 27, 2006 · 21 comments

Yay its Cyber Monday again! What is Cyber Monday? Its the biggest online shopping day of the year. (The first working day after thanksgiving).

Shopping is definitely up this year. Akamai has retailer charts that are updating every 5 minutes. By the way if you’re ever going to rely on a company to give you stats Akamai is a good one ;) Considering about 20% of the worlds internet traffic goes through Akamai. From their site – “Akamai now routinely delivers more than 200 Gb per second at times”. – SICK!

So anyway… how does your Cyber Monday stack up? Did you prepare for it? My affiliate numbers are about 10x what they were last years Cyber Monday. I think some of that is due to the fact that more people are becoming ok with shopping on the internet. Plus places like amazon.com make it so easy with their “1 click” shopping stuff.

BTW – Woot today has the Sanyo 42â€? HD Ready Plasma Display for only 899$ Thats pretty hot. Pick one of those up then you can play xbox 360 in 1080 res ;) . I love Woot! (I wish they had an affiliate program).

If you click play below you can listen to the Woot cast which talks about Cyber Monday.

Amazon.com had 1000 Xbox 360 systems on friday for $100, do you know any places that are going cheap on this one currently?

I hate to burst your bubble, but Cyber Monday is little more than a marketing gimmick; the biggest online shopping days are just before Thanksgiving and right around December 5. I’m not saying you won’t see increased traffic today, but it’s not really the biggest online shopping day of the year.

The good news? The best is still to come. :-)

I wouldnt know how good it is, my LiquidWeb server has been down all night apparently, even though I posted a ticket last night (I live in NZ), to which they replied last night saying they would fix it.

F*CKING WANKERS.

My site was down for 3.5 hours this morning from a DDOS. I am now looking at a dedicated box.

We’re seeing marginally higher sales. Nothing to write home about though.

well basically much like black friday it is used to gage participation

But how can “Cyber Monday” be used to gauge participation if it’s not even the highest-volume online shopping day?

It’s all hype. The “Cyber Monday” term was coined by news media, not by online retailers and affiliate marketers.

How do you know if it’s a good day or not? Most merchant affiliate programs don’t update the stats for a day or two. You won’t know your amazon orders until the stats update tommarow…

Much like many things on the web its more hype then fact. I think you are trying to hard ;)

That amazon sale was sick eh? They sold all of them in 24 seconds!

Time to find a new affiliate program.

Doubly so if you’re still using Amazon associates.

Akamai had North America up at 50% (over normal) today during business hours. Like BF it may not be the biggest, but its definitely an indicator of higher traffic.

I mentioned Amazon because Shoemoney mentioned it in his blog post. A lot of merchants that sell physical goods don’t show you your earnings until the product actually ships. What about those merchants? Which merchants show orders in real time? I don’t think Linkshare/Amazon/CJ/Sharasale merchants update their stats that quick.

We’re still digging out from the mountain of orders we received on Monday. Today wasn’t bad either.

From what I’ve read (and from past years of experience), December 18th should be the peak shopping day this year. If so, I’m almost scared of what that’ll be like.

Well, looks like Cyber Monday wasn’t all hype. It was the first day every to break $600 million in sales.
