301ing Typing Traffic Domains

Posted on: November 27th, 2006 by Jeremy Schoemaker

DaveN was first to spot this little tidbit… internet.com owns tons of domains they are redirecting to their other domains. They even have them on a domain http://redir.internet.com … interesting eh ?

So recently Matt Cutts called out a guy for owning a bunch of domains in public at Las Vegas Pubcon (I was not there for this). I wonder what Google’s thoughts are on people owning typein domains that 301 to there other sites. These sites seem to be doing pretty well in Google…

On Strikepoint DaveN also talked about Akismet… Dillsmack wrote a whitelist in case you want to whitelist people from Akismet. Check it out on his blog

A thousand – hmm we register customer domains under our name – so work has more domains than this and they don’t even offer more than minimal SEO services to their customers. Keeps the registration emails filters busy if nothing else.

I left the third “i” out of http://www.debian-administration.org the other day, I’m guessing the folks who have that one have rather more than 1000 domains. I can’t see anything to make me think it is domain kiting, I think they must just register common typos of existing domains. I’m not sure how they are doing advertising, since first time it was all about “administration of companies” (receivership), but now it is all “on topic” for the typo. So maybe I was the first to make that typo?

It’s interesting that they’re also redirecting all of their “.mobi” domains…I was under the impression that you could lose those domains if you don’t follow the .mobi guidelines.

    Good guess – 1.590 domains.
But I guess Matts point was that you shouldn’t own a bunch of domains with overlapping=duplicate content and that he wasn’t talking about redirects. What Matt said

I was there for that site review… The point Matt was trying to make to that guy was simply that his *main* site would probably do better if he focused all his energy on his main site rather than splitting his energy across a few dozen sites. In the context of that one presentation, Matt didn’t seem to be making any larger conclusions about owning multiple domains.
