Yup -- that's why I said I would have gone with HTTP_USER_AGENT instead. But I think this guy was looking for instant traffic, rather than search engine love.

Since he chose to target the referring sites, he should have thrown in stuff like Digg, Slashdot, etc... though their users would probably be quicker to give the victim a heads-up on the redirect than the average person using a search engine.

I guess it depends on what you're doing with the traffic. If you're just looking to pass out free spy-ware and fish for exploits, going for the quick & easy traffic was probably the way to go.

Actually, that .htaccess code does NOTHING for the search engine bots. They don't come with a referrer. The code kicks in if you follow a link from the search engine results to an affected site (as in having that evil .htaccess code).

I think I would've used HTTP_USER_AGENT in the .htaccess trick, rather than HTTP_REFERER. Seems like you'd still get benefits with the search engines and stay a little lower under the radar.

My Technorati ingredients kill for <a href="http://blog.justinpfister.com" rel="nofollow">blog.justinpfister.com</a>.. I have a whopping 131,000+.. My other ingredients are a little sour. For a while I was #16 on Technorati Top 100..
