First Radio Show Net Income Episode 1

By Jeremy Schoemaker 34 comments

Last night was the first episode of a new radio show I host on webmasterradio.fm called “Net Income”. (click here to download)

This was a REALLY new experience for me. I had been on “Seo RockStars” and “That’s A Wrap” as a guest but I had never been THE host of a show. I was super nervous right before the show. It was a live show and I was just going for it. The pressure kept building on me as we got closer to show-time. I thought about doing a DaveN and downing a few beers before the show but I am not much of a drinker so I thought that was a bad idea.

It was about 5 mins to show-time and I got a message from Eddie (aka mrintern) saying that my phone was not picking up… I was like WTF then I picked up my phone and MY WIFE WAS TALKING ON IT yaaaaaaaaa nice start…

So I asked her nicely to get off the phone and called eddie with about 1 min to go live then it hit me. WTF am I doing lol, for a second I was kind of scared and then I channeled Jack from LOST and how you count to five and then your cool (from season 1) and then I was good to go.

So the show started and I was sucking it hardcore.. I think I dropped a few umms and ahhhs. I am not comfortable just talking about myself and whatnot so I introduced the show and what it was about and what I wanted to do. I went into the first break and started to feel more comfortable.

As we came out of break I introduced Patrick gavin and asked him to tell everyone how he got started making money online leading up to where he is now. He gave a nice quick overview then we got to taking questions from the chat room members. There was a lot of people in the chat room. I have got some emails from people saying they can’t get into the chat because it was full. I am not sure if the web-chat is limited to 100 people at a time but it seemed to hover around that mark.

We took questions for a while then took another commercial break. It was about halfway through the show. After break we took phone calls. I really started to feel more comfortable with doing the radio thing. I think it was a ok show for my first show. I have some big ideas and really hope to do more interaction with users as webmaster radios capacity for that increases via chat and phone.

I am keeping a eye out for a co-host/topic for next week. Last week we covered making money from text link ads so this week I was thinking about subscription or donation as a base topic. For a host I think Lee Dodd might be a good choice. He owns several HUGE forums and knows how to make money from them.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Questions for the show? Also please feel free to drop critiques. I have a lot to learn and as I said before I never learned anything from a compliment.

Thanks again to webmasterradio.fm for this oppourtunity.

Great show! How about a show on driving traffic to your site. So much of monitization depends on or assumes rather that your site already has lots of quality traffic. It would be great to get your insights on that topic.

No reason to be nervous — It was great. Hopefully next time there will be time to critique a site or two.

    The Web: Social networking searches
Media mogul Martha Stewart is launching an online social network for women — joining other entrepreneurs who are starting similar projects and are collectively propelling social networks into the mainstream of the Internet, sources tell UPI’s The Web. The movement is becoming so pervasive that other media companies, including Google.com, with its Google Co-Op, and Yahoo! with its purchase of Del.icio.us, are starting search engines specifically for online communities — creating veritable miniature Internets within the global Internet.
There are even search engines, like Fun Mobility’s Connect engine, for those on the go, with mobile phones, who can’t bear to be away from their online community for more than a few minutes. By Gene Koprowski

I listened to the show and thought it was great! I second the topic of driving traffic for those without any sites that currently generate a lot of traffic (like myself). ;-) I do a lot of reading on this blog and DigitalPoint, but it I’m finding it tough to get these started from scratch.

    Again, great show!
    Thanks!

A show on ppc would be nice, especially on how to use it in conjunction with affiliate marketing.

yeah, you were nervous..so what? it was your first show..it just means you dont have your head stuck up your you know where..

it really was a good show though..and the chatroom..well, that’s the busiest i’ve seen it since i started idling there..it was crazy..

if i had to choose your next guest, i’d pick someone who doesnt seem to run in the WMR click..try Yanik Silver, Jeff Johnson, John Reese, etc…i’m also really wanting to hear an Earl Grey interview..

I see you change the name of the show from ‘Net Revenue’ to ‘Net Income’, does this mean I am the winner of your naming contest?

Do we get to see a transcript of the chat room conversations? That would be really useful. I cannot watch the show live due to my timezone.

I certainly enjoyed the show and didn’t really notice you were nervous!

And I wholly agree that people should build websites for people and not for the engines today. Doing the opposite makes cookie-cutter sites that worked 5 years ago but not in today’s competitive market.

Anyway good show and I would definitely love to see a new guest every time who has made it online in some interesting way like next week’s Lee Dodd.

Yes I think Patrick was very happy with the amount of user interest in textlinkads.com. I know the webmaster radio people were stunned at the amount of people that called in to ask him questions about his business.

I had Patrick on as a guest mainly because he is pretty much “the” guy to talk to about text link ads and what google and the other search engines think of them.

I did not know all the questions from users would be about his company in particular but that was cool. Give the users what they want ;)

Awesome show! Couldn’t tell at all that you were nervous. A forum/subscription show sounds great. Especially with a focus on driving participation in the forum and then driving monetization.

Great First Show! … but I gotta agree with Wesley. I think it has to be a balance between talking about the guest’s biz and getting real feedback on the topic.

Looking forward to the next one!

It was a great first show, you couldn’t really tell you had the jitters (except when you brought it up!) and I look forward to next ones as well. I had a couple suggestions… one is that when you agree with the guest, I don’t think you really need to say so explicitely and you can get away with simply respond with your ideas, saying you agree doesn’t add a tremendous amount (whereas if you disagree, you probably want to explicitely say so).

Also, you should mention that it would be a sort of Q&A for you and patrick, the callers won’t pseudo-cut you off as you chimed in after a guest.

Again, it was a great show, everyone knows it was your first time out and even so, it was still a quality program. Keep it up!
