Organic Search Listings – When You Can’t Be First, Be last

by Jeremy Schoemaker on June 5, 2006 · 3 comments

When I was at SES Toronto I had a good discussion with Todd Freisen about organic search engine placement. That night I made a draft entry in my wordpress for this post but I never added anything more. I often do that.

Basically the thing is this. Most of the time when people search they will only look at the top 3-4 rankings then scroll down to get to the next page. But there eye will catch the 9-10 result.. thus why sometimes 4-8 can yield suprisingly little traffic.

So I always tell people just get on the front page…. and dont worry about being #10

On one of my blogs we tend to get a lot of 10s that give great traffic. I would rather have a 10-12 than a 5-8… 5-8′s rarely show up in my traffic unless the term has huge traffic.

I usually prefer to spend my time working on a different phrase, than to spend all weekend turning a number 8 into a number 4.

However, a report was recently published that shows people mostly just look at the first 4-5 results on a page.
