Dave Chappelle on Oprah explains mysterious leave

by Jeremy Schoemaker on February 2, 2006 · 6 comments

This was on Oprah 2/3/2006 but because I hate Oprah and work during the day I missed it.

I was one of Dave Chappelle’s bigest fans and very puzzled myself when he left 50 million dollars on the table last year to Comedy Central. Not to mention just leaving for Africa and not telling his wife he left or where he was going.

I was really excited to see him ALIVE and speaking period. He appears a little mentally spent still and I hope he recovers.

Personally, I didn’t buy it. He wasn’t willing to admit any fault, and he kept shifting things around making himself the victim. I think he went nuts, plain and simple. Mariah Carey style.

Now I haven’t seen this interview, but let me guess why ol Dave went nutty — drugs, maybe? Naaaaaaaah.

Makes sense to me, Dave is really good at what he does, and thats where he got where he is. CEOs, managers, politicians these are the guys that can deal with high stress situations with other people constantly trying to control and manipulate them day to day. If you watch the whole interview, I think its pretty clear what happened here. I’m an artist and from my own personal experience, that kind of creativity stuff works at a completely different level from business, programming, or even writing. The artist might look crazy from the outside, but in reality there is a much more complex situation going on in their own mind.

The Oprah interview was OK. You should really check out Chapelle on Inside the Actor’s Studio. They’re replaying it a few more times on Bravo this month, then March 2nd:

Hilarious interview. It was just funny to see James Lipton singing the praises of Half Baked, which Dave commented on.

Because you conduct yourself similar to a spoiled minor it’s good to imagine to be dealt with as a spoiled kid, the preferred triple A credit score was probably always in danger and only a fool couldn’t have been aware of this point.
