Million Dollar Homepage – best investment ever?

by Jeremy Schoemaker on December 27, 2005 · 19 comments

I bought 100px on milliondollarhomepage on November 30th, almost 1 month ago. I put a small logo of ShoeMoney in it and linked it to my blog. Why? I dunno I just thought it was cool to be a part of history.

Here is neat thing- I’m actually getting quite a bit of traffic from it. In fact Averaging about 20 uniq a day from http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/ . I honestly cant even find my logo on the main page its so small but I think it must be below something that people are clicking on and they are accidentally clicking on my little microscopic logo.

This has got me thinking though… What if I would have bought enough space for a huge banner and used it for a commercial site. I think I missed an opportunity there. O well at least my blog that makes me zero money has benefited from this =P

Update:I found it !

$100 is beer money and its a good for the conversation value and cool factor but i doubt its a good spend from a ROI point of view. Let me do a small math :)

Assuming this is a novelity and the traffic dies in a year you will get 7300 (365 x20) *untargetted* visitors in total for $100 …If you buy traffic from adword for 5 cents a pop (believe me there are still keywords available for 5 cents) you can get 2000 targeted visitors for $100 . At any time i will opt for the latter!

HAHAHA I found your logo!! If you view source, you can find “shoemoney” and it gives you coordinates of 960, 130 and 970,140. cut those down to 96, 13 and 97, 14, you’re near the top of the page, 13 “rows” down all the way on the right, four “columns” in from the right. You’re right next to the big Yellow and red “Fonts” image. :] You can hardly see the logo, but if you mouseover it it says shoemoney. :]

I agree it is a good idea for the conversation piece (although my friends would have no idea what I was talking about).

Then again, how do you know if it is a good investment unless you try it. Hindsight is 20/20.

Wow – that’s the quickest website in achieving that amount of money in such a short time! How about that pagerank 7 …? Isn’t that amazing too?!

The thousands of copy-cats that appeared after milliondollarhomepage
made it big won’t get too far since the idea of selling pixels is no
longer novel! But now this site has popped up:

Claiming to “change the way advertising works”, OnlyOneAd.com is
selling only one ad. That’s right, there is only space for ONE ad
on the page. The first ad costs $1. To replace the ad, the next
advertiser must pay $2. After that, it costs $4, and so on. Each
new ad costs twice the amount of the previous ad. That means the
21st ad costs over one million dollars. The creator seems convinced
he can reach his goal, which actually seems possible if he can
generate enough buzz. He’s keeping a detailed blog, and so far only
the 1st ad has sold for $1! How is this going to turn out?

Honestly, I did the exact thing you talked about. Not too big, but 600px.
I did nothing but put a small slogan, pointed to an affiliate site.
NOTHING more of investment or efforts!
made me at least twice the money i invested yet.

also though about a big banner some times… ;o)
